Building your first hex crawl in Hexal
A hex crawl is only as good as what’s waiting in the hexes. Hexal gives each hex its own content and ties it together with NPCs, factions, and regions.
Content per hex
Select a hex and use the detail panel to add five kinds of content: locations, encounters, NPCs, treasures, and clues & hooks. Each item can be marked resolved once your party has dealt with it, so you can see at a glance what’s still live.
The bigger picture
- Encounters get their own editor: type (combat, social, exploration, puzzle), a creature roster, rewards, difficulty, and an outcome. Save reusable encounter templates for random tables.
- NPCs live in a directory with race, class, alignment, attitude, faction, and relationships to other NPCs.
- Factions track goals, headquarters, and membership.
- Regions group hexes into named areas with colored borders and their own discovery status.
Let Hexal fill the blanks
Procedural generation can seed terrain, encounters, and landmarks using density sliders, driven by a seeded random generator - the same seed always produces the same result, so you can regenerate reproducibly or lock in something you like.
Finding things fast
Press Cmd+K for the command palette to jump straight to any hex, region, or NPC. Every edit is undoable - Hexal keeps a 50-step history (Cmd+Z / Cmd+Shift+Z).
